Northern Territory

Australia’s Northern Territory, known as the Top End is six times the size of Britain and stretches from the coastal tropical north to the desert heart of the Red Centre.  Ayers Rock (Uluru) and the many desert landforms are still the main attractions of the state, however, the World Heritage wilderness of the Kakadu National Park is well worth a visit too.

The state offers rich Aboriginal culture as well as breathtaking scenery, stunning national parks and excellent opportunities for walking, touring and camping.  Best time to visit is during the dry season, from May to October.

Darwin is the gateway to the Northern Territory, almost destroyed by a cyclone in 1974, the city has been restored to its old charm, offering museums and galleries including many Aboriginal art collections.  The city makes the ideal base to explore the national parks of Kakadu, Litchfield and Katherine Gorge.

The World’s largest monolith, Uluru, is over two miles wide and 300 metres high.  A selection of restaurants, bars and hotels have been built near Uluru and visitors should allow at least two nights to sample the various activities available in this region.  Excursions available include camel rides in the Outback, balloon trips, rides on Harley Davidsons, helicopter flights, Aboriginal tours and quad bike adventures.

Kings Canyon is an extraordinary chasm of sandstone walls plunging 270 metres down to a tropical oasis at its base.  Spend time on the canyons’ rim looking at the red rock formations which create a mysterious landscape and its lush Garden of Eden.

The ‘last chance’ town of Alice Springs was founded in the 1800’s as an overland telegraph station.  Today it is a thriving town and home to the Aviation Museum and Royal Flying Doctors Service.
