New South Wales
Captain Cook discovered Australia when he landed in New South Wales in 1770. The state enjoys a warm, temperate climate and seasonal changes throughout the year and attracts thousands of visitors annually. Sydney, one of the most beautiful cities in the world is where many people start their visit to Australia but as the state offers so much more, be sure to allow a few extra days so that you don’t miss out.
The wine-producing region of the Hunter Valley, just a two-hour drive from Sydney, offers wide-open spaces where you can indulge in gourmet food and sample the local wines. Explore the region by car or horse-drawn carriage at your own pace.
The Blue Mountains, so called because of the blue haze of fine mist given off by the eucalyptus trees is less than two hours from Sydney. This area offers spectacular sightseeing with its clear mountain air, untamed bush, interesting rock formations and native wildlife.
Just south of Sydney is a strip of unspoilt coastline offering pristine beaches, quaint rural villages and pretty seaside towns. The South Coast has 10 separate national and marine parks stretching from Berry to the border with Victoria and this would make an ideal area to visit if you are driving between Sydney and Melbourne.
Port Stephens to the north of Sydney is home to an abundance of families of dolphins and is famed for its idyllic coastline and crystal clear bays. This is an area of outstanding beauty.
Spend time in Australia’s largest city Sydney and you will not be disappointed, it really is the most picturesque harbour city in the world. If you take a short harbour cruise you will be as enchanted with the fantastic views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge from the water as I was. The more intrepid will enjoy a view over the city when they do a Bridge Climb but this is not for sufferers of vertigo! Sample the unparalleled dining, outdoor café culture and wonderful hotels on offer and spend time strolling through the many galleries, boutiques and antiques shops in the Rocks area.
