Northern Cape
The Northern Cape is South Africa’s biggest province and consists mostly of desert or semi-desert and a virtually deserted, but beautiful coastline.
The ‘Karoo’ forms much of the province with low-growing shrubs and numerous species of succulent plants. With the first rains, this seemingly arid soil of the Karoo bursts into abundant life producing the most beautiful, if short-lived, flowers.
The Namakwa region of the Northern Cape lies to the west of the province. Each spring (July – Sept) the dormant lands here come alive with the most magnificent display of wild flowers including many rare, unique and endangered plants.
There are more than 6000 plant species here, dozens of species of reptiles and amphibians and an unknown number of insects. More than 40% of those species are found no-where else on Earth.
Kimberley is perhaps the most well known town of the Northern Cape. As well as many museums, monuments, art galleries and lovely old buildings, take a visit to the largest human-made hole in the World. Known as the Big Hole, it was the first opencast diamond mine in the area. The adjacent Mine Museum is well worth a visit. The diamond fields around Kimberley are home of De Beers, the World’s greatest diamond company.
