Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga is the safari capital of South Africa. With much of the Kruger National Park in the province and any private reserves, there is something for everyone. Accommodation in Kruger Park ranges from clean campsites and comfortable lodges to luxurious lodges opened under concession with the park authorities in remote areas within the park. The private game reserves on its borders are, almost without exception, luxurious.   Temperatures can reach over 40 degrees centigrade in this northerly part of South Africa, so this fact should be accounted for when planning a safari.

The ‘Highveld’ area is much cooler. It consists of rolling grassland with many wild flowers and streams. Much of the area has been cultivated as pine plantations, but there are still some pockets of indigenous forest. Trout has been introduced into some streams and dams in the Dullstroom and Lyenberg areas.

The town of Sabie is a popular tourist destination and also a good stopover point to and from Kruger. The whole area has a colourful history, particularly its gold rush era. The museum town of Pilgrim’s Rest is well worth a visit and gives an indication of the way of life in those hard days of the 1870’s.

Many people visit this lovely province just to do sightseeing, as it is scenically magnificent. A long drive taking in the spectacular God’s Window, Bourke’s Potholes in the Blyde River, the town of Graskop, the Three Rondawels (three almost circular mountains), the Swadini Dam and the Sudwala Caves can be done comfortably in a day. Blyde River Canyon is the third largest canyon in the world and stretches for 80 km.
