Limpopo
The northern, less crowded, wilder part of Kruger National Park falls into this province. It’s quite a sparsely populated province, with many interesting cultural sites. It is the home of the South African variety of the majestic baobab trees and some of the richest archaeological sites, including the ancient kingdom of Mapungubwe.
The province is divided up into four regions, Waterberg, Capricorn, Zoutpansberg and Valley of the Olifants. There are numerous provincial parks, private reserves and nature reserves offering a range of accommodation. Many of Limpopo’s game and nature reserves are home to the five species of animal considered to form part of the group commonly named the ‘Big 5’.
Limpopo has opportunities for abseiling, canoeing/kayaking, caving, hot-air ballooning, white-water rafting and for the very adventurous, kloofing. Kloofing is not for the faint-hearted – be prepared to scramble over rock and ridge, climb, hike through indigenous forest, negotiate sheer rock faces and launch yourself over the edge of waterfalls into breathtaking pools!
