Kwazulu Natal
With the warm Indian Ocean on its Eastern side and the Drakensberg Mountains to the west, Kwazulu Natal has a vast number of attractions for the visitor.
Durban, positioned on the coast, is the main city of the province. The beachfront is 6km long, known locally as the Golden Mile and has superb swimming, fishing piers, crafts and flea markets, hotels and restaurants. Surfing is amazing and many competitions are held here. The Botanical Gardens are well worth a visit, as is the new Ushaka Marine World – Africa’s largest aquarium and a ‘wet’n wild’ fun experience. An absolute must if taking children! Further along the coast in both directions, many Blue Flag beach resorts can be found offering a good range of accommodation including Ballito to the North and Margate to the South.
The Drakenbergs are a wonderful place for hiking and horse riding amidst the most spectacular scenery. There is a good selection of golf courses and many fishing opportunities. Accommodation varies from basic self-catering properties to luxury mountain retreats. The Kingdom of Lesotho is accessible from this region. A 4x4 vehicle may be required to drive up the highest road pass in Africa. The scenery from there is breathtaking!
Between the mountains and the sea, the Midlands area offers rolling green hills with quaint villages, teashops, restaurants and art and craft shops.
The Kingdom of Zululand is situated in the North of the province where there are countless sites of historical battles (including Blood River, Isandlwana, and Rorke’s Drift), museums and monuments. Guided tours of these areas are strongly recommended.
There are a number of cultural villages where tourists are welcomed by the Zulu people and shown typical Zulu homes and an insight into their way of life.
Other major attractions of the province are the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve, a great big five reserve with lots of white and black rhinos and the St Lucia Wetland Park where hippos and crocodiles can be easily sighted.
