Situated between the Vaal and Orange Rivers, the pride of the province is the beautiful Golden Gate Highlands National Park. In the foothills of the Maluti Mountains in the east, this is a high-level wonderland of cliffs, crags, rocks, rolling grassland and pretty streams. Its ‘golden’ colour comes from the reflection of the sun on sandstone.
Clarens is an ideal country retreat, popular among artists and craftspeople and is on the route to the Golden Gate National Park. Situated in the green and mountainous Eastern Free State, this lovely town, close to the Lesotho border is an absolute gem. Filled with Victorian-style houses built from local sandstone, it has become an artist’s retreat over the years with dedicated art galleries and studios.
Bloemfontein, the stately capital is renowned for its impressive reddish sandstone buildings and for its parks and roses. Its name means ‘spring of flowers’ and it certainly lives up to its name. There are thousands of rose bushes lining the streets, which create a wonderful spectacle most of the year. The annual rose festival takes place every October.
Bloemfontein is very conveniently situated as a stopover point between Johannesburg and Cape Town. The city has good air connections for domestic flights within South Africa and daily train services to Cape Town, Johannesburg/Pretoria and East London.
